The park is within the mountain itself, which is the highest mountain in Kenya, and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. Mt Kenya national park hosts animals like Elephants, tree hyrax, white-tailed mongoose, suni, black-fronted duiker, mole rats, bushbucks, water buck, and Elands.
Animals rarely seen include leopards, bongos, and giant forest hogs. Over 130 bird species have been recorded. The scenery surrounding this designated World Heritage Site is breathtaking. It is a pristine wilderness with lakes, tarns, glaciers, dense forests, mineral springs, and a selection of rare and endangered species of animals, high altitude adapted plains game, and unique montane and alpine vegetation.
Visitors can enjoy mountain climbing, camping, and caving with the mountain’s rugged glacier-clad peaks providing the perfect backdrop. The mountain is a significant source of water in Kenya.
